Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy refers to therapy with the assistance of horses. Equine therapy has been used for a number of years to assist clients who are struggling with anxiety, PTSD, depression, childhood trauma, attachment wounds and relationship difficulty. As human beings we are innately compassionate and sometimes, through various life events and circumstances, we lose touch with our ability to connect with ourselves and others. Horses are such gentle and patient creatures who provide the perfect companion for healing. Learning to connect physically and care for a horse can help you reconnect with your own body and self.

At the Journey Counselling and Psychotherapy, we are delighted to offer Equine Assisted Psychotherapy through the knowledge and expertise of Michaelah Robinson, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). If you are interested in working alongside horses, while being guided through your therapeutic journey by Michealah, you’ve found the right place.

When you are ready, reach out to our Care Coordinator to get started. During your first consultation call, our Care Coordinator will provide you with the appropriate paperwork and walk you through the first steps. She will then schedule you with a time to meet with Michealah to ensure that EAP is the right fit for you.

Developing trust is essential for the healing process to begin. Trust with yourself, trust with your therapist and trust with the horses. Horses provide a non-judgemental and safe space for you to explore your authenticity, practice co-regulation, and learn to be mindful.

During your first virtual session, your therapist, Michealah, will begin establishing trust by offering you an opportunity to get to know her and her family’s farm (where your sessions will take place).

If you are not ready to begin working with a horse right away, you can sit together in the pasture or the barn and observe these majestic creatures from a far. Sitting in nature, breathing in fresh air can provide the essential backdrop for your therapeutic journey.
