Finding Stability in an Uncertain World

Practical Ways to Stay Grounded When Everything Feels Chaotic

Written by Talisa Haskins

What the F$%! Is Going On with the World?! Seriously—does anyone else feel this way?

Political drama, economic crises, global conflicts... and it is STILL snowing!

If you’re anything like me, you might be finding it hard to get out of bed some days because, well, everything just feels so hard.

When life gets overwhelming, I turn to my coping skills. And today, I want to share a few that might help you too.

  1. Focus on What’s in Your Control Grab a piece of paper and draw a big circle. Now, inside that circle, draw a smaller one. Now think about something that’s stressing you out right now. Maybe it’s politics, finances, or global uncertainty. In the smaller circle, write down the things you CAN control. For example:

    • Supporting local businesses

    • Advocating for change

    • Talking to friends and loved ones

    • Seeking therapy

    • Building a budget

In the larger circle, list what’s OUT of your control. Such as:

    • Other people’s opinions

    • International conflicts

    • Election results

Now take a step back. Instead of pouring your energy into what’s in that big circle (things you can’t change), focus on the small circle. That’s where your power is.

  2. Identify Your Support System Hard times are easier when we don’t go through them alone. Take a moment to list the trusted people in your life and what you might turn to them for.

Notice any gaps? That’s okay—now’s the time to fill them. Reach out to a therapist, explore community resources, or ask a friend or family member for guidance.

  3. Build a Budget & Start Saving With recession concerns looming, it’s important to check in on your finances. Start by making small, manageable changes:

    • Split subscription services with a friend

    • Batch cook and freeze meals to reduce food waste

    • Find one expense to cut back on

    • Save something—even $2 per paycheck counts!

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s about small, consistent steps toward financial security.

  4. UNPLUG from the Media Yes, I’m yelling. TURN. IT. OFF.

Doomscrolling won’t make the world’s problems disappear—it just keeps our brains stuck in a stress loop.

    • Set time limits for social media

    • Reduce your intake of political/news content

    • Prioritize real-world connection over online noise

Too much input = overwhelm. Scale back where you can.

  5. Practice Basic Self-Care When the world feels chaotic, the basics matter more than ever.

    • Get enough sleep

    • Move your body in ways that feel good

    • Eat nourishing food

    • Take breaks when you need them

Your well-being is not an afterthought—it’s the foundation for handling everything else.

  6. Pace Yourself This isn’t a sprint. The challenges we’re facing won’t resolve overnight. So we have to approach life like a marathon.

    • Take breaks

    • Slow down

    • Set boundaries

    • Focus on one step at a time

You’re not alone in feeling this way. But you are capable of moving through it. One small, intentional action at a time.
