Mental Health Check-In

Resetting After the Holidays

Written by Talisa Haskins

The start of a new year often brings a mix of excitement, hope, and, sometimes, overwhelm. The holiday season, while joyful, can also leave us feeling a little off-balance—late nights, disrupted routines, social obligations, and indulgent treats can all take a toll on our mental and physical well-being.

January is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and give yourself permission to reset. A gentle mental health check-in can help you step into the new year feeling grounded, refreshed, and ready for what’s ahead.

Check Your Routines

Our daily habits have a big impact on how we feel. After the holidays, you may notice changes in your eating patterns, movement, or productivity. Ask yourself: Are my routines supporting my well-being or draining my energy?

Small adjustments can make a significant difference:

  • Set regular meal times and include nourishing foods.

  • Schedule short movement breaks, even a 10-minute walk, to energize your body.

  • Create a simple morning or evening routine to anchor your day.

Prioritize Sleep

Disrupted sleep is common during the holiday season. Late nights, travel, and celebrations can throw off your body’s natural rhythm, leaving you feeling fatigued or irritable.

Try gently re-establishing your sleep routine:

  • Go to bed and wake up at consistent times.

  • Reduce screen time before bed and create a calming pre-sleep ritual.

  • Make your bedroom a restful space—dim lights, comfortable bedding, and minimal distractions.

Balance Your Social Energy

The holidays often involve a lot of socializing, which can leave us feeling either energized or drained. January is a good time to notice what kind of social balance you need.

Consider:

  • Do you need more quiet time to recharge?

  • Are there connections that bring you joy and support you?

  • Can you set boundaries around social commitments to protect your energy?

Be Gentle With Yourself

This mental health check-in isn’t about perfection. It’s about noticing what you need, being compassionate with yourself, and taking small steps toward a more balanced year. Even minor adjustments can create a sense of control, calm, and clarity as you move forward.

Try a Simple January Reset Exercise

  1. Take five minutes to write down how you’re feeling physically, emotionally, and mentally.

  2. Identify one small change that could help you feel more grounded.

  3. Commit to trying it for the next week and notice the difference.

Starting the year with self-awareness and intention doesn’t require huge resolutions. It’s about giving yourself space to reset, reflect, and focus on what truly matters—your well-being.
